Child Eyecare

Eyesight concerns can emerge at any point in life, underscoring the importance of monitoring your child's eye health from an early age. Routine examinations ensure timely recognition and management of potential issues.

We recommend that your child's first detailed eye evaluation be scheduled around their third birthday, followed by biennial appointments once they commence school. For those already wearing corrective glasses, opting for yearly check-ups is wise.

The importance of child eye care

Your child's educational and overall growth is closely intertwined with their vision, given that most youngsters rely predominantly on visual cues for learning up to the age of 12. Several vision challenges might remain undetected since kids often lack a benchmark to gauge their sight.

Therefore, unless they report symptoms like visual discomfort, frequent headaches, or academic challenges, their vision problems can go unnoticed. This underlines the importance of periodic eye assessments for your child.

Indications that your child might have vision-related problems include the following:

  • Relucting to engage with distant objects or scenes.
  • Habitually sitting too close to the TV or classroom board and holding objects unusually close to their eyes.
  • Regular squinting or pronounced sensitivity to brightness.
  • Challenges with hand-eye synchronisation, such as struggles with catching a ball.

What's included in my child's eye exam?

During this evaluation, our trained optometrist will check:

  • How the pupils react to different light conditions.
  • The ability of the eyes to trace objects and maintain focus.
  • The health of the retina using retinoscopy techniques.
  • Instead of the traditional letter board, young kids might be presented with various symbols or patterns. For those not familiar with letters, the "tumbling E" activity is used, where they show the direction the letter "E" is turned.

Based on the assessment, we'll determine if prescription eyewear is necessary for your child. If so, we advise revisiting annually for adjustments, as children's visual requirements frequently evolve.
